In 1557, the council of Cuzco was informed of the abdication of Charles V, and they received the order to acknowledge Phillip II as their legitimate sovereign and to proclaim him publicly. This order was soon obeyed by Cuzco’s oligarchy, who also instructed the council scribe to write two documents to attest their loyalty to the new king and to inform him of the celebrations in his honor. This paper analyses all the actions which took place within this royal proclamation, explaining how was ceremony, which was its meaning, and who took part therein.es
