Cádiz entre Europa y África: una paradoja geográfica

Abstract

Los textos geográficos sobre ἐσχατιά son los más influenciados por construcciones mentales preexistentes. La imagen proyectada por los antiguos de un Occidente de mareas y puestas de sol fabulosas y abundante en metales es bien conocida, pero existen ejemplos de “distorsión” de la realidad geográfica a niveles más sorprendentes para la mentalidad geográfica moderna. Es el caso de la fluctuación en la localización de Cádiz, límite de Europa pero también de África en ciertas tradiciones que han confundido a autores modernos. Nuestro estudio identificará las construcciones que subyacen a estas tradiciones para explicar cómo se llega a ese punto.

Geographical texts about ἐσχατιά are the most influenced by preexisting mental constructions. The image, projected by the ancients, of the West as a place of fabulous tides and sunsets and rich in metals is well known, but there are examples of geographical reality being distorted at more surprising levels for a modern geographical mentality. This is the case of the fluctuation in the location of Cadiz, Western boundary of Europe but also of Africa in certain textual traditions which have confused modern authors. Our study will identify the constructions that lie behind those traditions in order to explain how this happened.
