"Corax contumax": Petronio y Aristófanes en "sat." 117

Abstract

La función de Córax, uno de los personajes menores del "Satyricon", ha desconcertado desde siempre a la crítica, sobre todo debido al estado en que nos ha llegado el texto. Se han tejido varias conjeturas acerca de su significado y función: dentro de este marco, este trabajo se propone reforzar la original hipótesis de M. Labate (1986) de que Córax sería el “delator” de la farsa de Crotona a partir del análisis intertextual entre Sat. 117, episodio fundamental para la consideración del personaje, ya que en ese momento finalmente recibe su nombre, y la apertura de Ranas de Aristófanes. Córax, lejos de ser simplemente un personaje farsesco, destacado únicamente por su rusticidad y vulgaridad, demuestra con su arrogancia y desprecio una actitud desafiante, que puede considerarse síntoma incipiente de la futura delación.

The function of Corax, one of the “Satyricon” minor characters, has puzzled scholars since the beginnings because of the poor state of the text. Several speculations have been done about his meaning and function: in this context, this paper aims at strengthen the M. Labate’s (1986) original supposition that Corax is the “betrayer” of the Croton’s scheme from an intertextual relationship: the opening scene of Aristophanes’ Ranae and Sat. 117, where finally Corax receives his name. Far from being just a slapstick character, distinguished by his coarseness, Corax, contemptuous and arrogant, shows a defiant attitude which can be thought as sign of the incipient betrayal.
