Sara de Vargas Torres e Hinojosa: mujer de hacienda y haciendas en Piura (Perú) en el siglo XVII

Abstract

Sara de Vargas fue una de las mujeres mejor posicionadas del siglo XVII en Piura, fiel reflejo de una sociedad estratificada, en la que se daba mucha importancia al linaje y a la fortuna, elementos que ella poseía y que la colocaban en el vértice de la sociedad piurana. Descendía de las familias fundadoras de Trujillo de Extremadura y estaba emparentada con Francisco Pizarro. Madre de dos hijos varones y tres mujeres, se esforzó por concertar para ellas los mejores enlaces matrimoniales, intentando asegurar con ello la continuidad de sus bienes, en manos de yernos aparentemente idóneos. Sin dejar de respetar las estructuras patriarcales de la época estudiada, el personaje sorprende por el protagonismo que refleja en las decisiones tomadas, así como en documentos firmados de propia mano, dentro del conjunto de estrategias utilizadas para garantizar el crecimiento de su fortuna.

Sara de Vargas was one of the best positioned women in the 17th century in Piura, as the reflex of a stratified society, where lineage and fortune had too much importance. She had both of them and was located in the summit of the society of Piura. She descended from the families that founded “Trujillo de Extremadura” and was related to Francisco Pizarro. Mother of two sons and three daughters, she made a great effort to find appropriate husbands for them, trying hard to save her properties. Respecting patriarchal structures of the studied age, this character surprises us with the protagonist roll that she assumes and reflex in her decisions, and in the documents signed by her own hand, in the context of strategies used to guarantee her wealth increase.
