Los estudios sobre el liberalismo han entendido que la interpretación de la libertad política que Constant y Berlín habían desarrollado resultaba casi idéntica. Este acuerdo, compartido por gran parte de la bibliografía actual -incluida la corriente republicana de Skinner y Pettit-, pasa por alto una distinción fundamental entre estos dos pensadores. Mientras que Berlín otorga a la libertad positiva un interés secundario, Constant la concibe como la única y suprema garantía de la libertad de los modernos.
