This document addresses the recognition and identification of vertical traffic signs in both virtual and real environments. The first step involves the creation of a simulation environment using the Gazebo and ROS fra meworks. Traffic sign models have also been included. The absence of such models in open-source platforms has led to their creation from scratch, thus dedicating several pages of the document to explain the procedure and justificating the choices that have been made. Next, the virtual model of a real robot is integrated into the ROS environment, with particular emphasis on its RGB camera simulation. The main part of this document is devoted to the development and implementation of a vision system that recognizes a predefined set of traffic signs in both the created virtual scenario and real images gathered from the Google Maps repository. The recognition algorithm follows a traditional structure with three main blocks. Initially, the image is segmented by a color filter, which has a novel approach as an optimization problem. In the intermediate stage, a shape classifier determines the sign’s type using Hu’s first invariant moment and a hollowness measure. This is a robust solution with a very short execution time. Finally, the identification of the internal symbols on the signs is carried out by a neural network of fully connected layers. Everything has been coded at a very low level of abstraction to promote portability to other languages and serve as a solid base for future projects. In addition, public access has been made available to the traffic sign repository as a contribution to the ROS and Gazebo communities. |
