Bus line planning is essential for efficient and sustainable urban mobility. This undergraduate thesis focuses on optimizing these networks, addressing the problem from two perspectives: passenger-oriented, aiming to minimize travel times, and operator-oriented, seeking to maximize profitability. Building upon Antía Fernández's Master's thesis, this research incorporates new variables and constraints to enhance the viability and efficiency of solutions in real-world contexts. Optimization techniques are employed to design bus networks that maximize coverage and optimize resource utilization. Furthermore, a new model is proposed with the primary goal of finding profitable bus networks from the operator's perspective. The defined objective function measures the total network profit considering revenue and cost terms. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed models, computational experiments were conducted using the well-known 1980 Mandl network, comprising 15 nodes and 21 bidirectional arcs representing connections between 15 Swiss cities. Different scenarios were analyzed by adjusting various combinations of input parameters. In each case, the mathematical model was solved, and solutions varied significantly in structure depending on the objective considered. The thesis is structured into several sections: defining primary objectives, conducting a literature review, describing the problem, presenting mathematical models with their data, variables, and constraints, and analyzing objectives from both passenger and operator perspectives. The results provide practical recommendations for improving the quality and accessibility of public transportation through optimal bus line planning. |
