La acción de las flotas de guerra en la época de Alfonso X (1240-1285)

Abstract

Es este trabajo analizaremos el papel que jugaron las flotas medievales en la época de Alfonso X. Para ello primero habría que establecer qué es una flota, de qué se compone tanto a nivel humano como material y cómo se dirige. Hay que tener en cuenta la fragilidad de las flotas en esta época a nivel institucional, por la inestabilidad de su formación y mantenimiento debido a limitaciones políticas, logísticas y económicas, resultando en la práctica en la inexistencia de una armada real permanente. Acto seguido no centraremos en las funciones o labores que llevaron a cabo, cuáles eran y cómo se acometían.

Probablemente nos encontramos ante una etapa de cristalización de ciertas funciones que ya se llevaban a cabo y que no variaran básicamente hasta mediados del s. XV, con el peso de la artillería embarcada. No obstante, otra cosa es la forma de hacerlo, y hay que señalar ciertos avances en el diseño naval o disposición de remos (trirremes y naos) y, sobre todo, en la navegación de fines de siglo S.XIII que permitirán mayor carga y un quizás diferente planteamiento de las rutas de acceso, aunque eso ya es material para otro trabajo

In this essay we will analyse the role of the medieval fleets around the time of Alfonso´s X of Castile, though not only regarding the Castilian crown. To start with we will have to establish what a fleet was, how was organized, composed, and led. We have to bear in mind that in this time Fleets were incredible fragile from an institutional point of view due to the instability of their creation in a time where a true royal and permanent royal navy did not exist. Only then we will focus on the role of the fleets and how they fought or try to accomplish the objectives marked.

This is likely a time of certain evolution but also crystallization of some roles attach to a medieval fleet; roles that would hardly change, tough it will increase, till the end of the Middle Ages, except for the developments in sailing and bigger ships from the last years of the 13th century that allowed to different ways to achieving them.
