Fernando III, rey de Castilla y León

Abstract

El reinado de Fernando III de Castilla y León nos muestra un hito decisivo en la conformación de una monarquía autoritaria, capaz de superar la rigidez de las estructuras feudales heredadas y contribuir, así, a la futura creación de un modelo político soberano. Su contribución en este sentido sigue tres líneas de actuación: la institucionalización del reino, entendido como un espacio político coherente bien estructurado y claramente mediatizado por la iniciativa del monarca; la consumación de un proceso de territorialización de ese mismo reino, convertido en el más poderoso de entre los hispánicos, y que va a permitir a su titular alcanzar cotas de liderazgo cruzadista a nivel peninsular –nos fijaremos con especial atención en la idea de imperio como herramienta de ese liderazgo–; y, finalmente, una actuación exterior cuyo eje principal es el de un alineamiento con la corte germánica.

The reign of Ferdinand III of Castile and León shows us a decisive landmark for the formation of an authoritarian monarchy, capable of overcoming the rigidity of the inherited feudal structures and contributing to the future creation of a sovereign political model. His contribution in this sense follows three lines of action: the institutionalization of the kingdom, understood as a coherent political space properly structured and clearly mediated by the initiative of the monarch; the fulfillment of a process of territorialisation of that same kingdom, turned into the most powerful among Spanish kingdoms, and that will allow its holder to reach levels of crusading leadership at the Iberian soil –we will pay special attention to the idea of empire as a tool of that leadership–; and, finally, an external action whose main axis is that of an alignment with the Germanic court.
