The buccal fat pad (BFP) is a biconvex adipose structure bounded by a thin capsule. The buccal fat pad (BFP) is a biconvex adipose structure bounded by a thin capsule. Its removal can enhance zygomatic prominences resulting in an inverted beauty triangle. Objectives: This study focuses on a systematic review of the literature on BFP removal to improve facial aesthetics and compare the effectiveness of different techniques in postoperative management. Method: A search was carried out in the electronic database PubMed, in which 4 articles were found, after entering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, which were selected after complete reading. Results: Among the results found in the 4 selected articles, we will focus on the materials and techniques used to perform bichectomy. Conclusion: BFP removal has a favorable initial outcome with respect to facial esthetics, complication rates were low and we found similar effects for edema control in photobiomodulation (PBM), dexamethasone (DMX) and hydrodissection, referring to masticatory function, which performed in patients treated with PBM. However, there are no comparative studies between these techniques. |
