Abstract | Las transfusiones son actos médicos gracias a los cuales se han salvado miles de vidas, para ello
se sigue un método protocolizado en el que la sangre pasa por procesos de extracción,
conservación, fraccionamiento, ... Las transfusiones son actos médicos gracias a los cuales se han salvado miles de vidas, para ello se sigue un método protocolizado en el que la sangre pasa por procesos de extracción, conservación, fraccionamiento, preservación y transfusión. Los componentes sanguíneos deben presentar unas características de hemocompatibilidad de los grupos ABO y el factor Rh, así como la visualización de anticuerpos irregulares además del control de enfermedades transmitidas por la sangre para poder ser aceptados. La sangre siempre ha sido fuente de vida, y en este trabajo plasmamos la historia de cómo se pudo llegar a dominar las técnicas de transfusión. Desde la antigüedad, dicho fluido se veía como un elemento de poder que podía dar o quitar la vida, usando medios como la sangría o la ingesta de sangre. No será hasta el siglo XVII cuando irán tomando forma los primeros experimentos que servirán para asentar los fundamentos básicos de la transfusión, primero realizándose experimentos en animales (Richard Lower) y, posteriormente, en personas (Jean Baptiste Denys). El siglo XVIII supuso un letargo para su desarrollo debido a la prohibición de dicha técnica y no fue retomada hasta el siglo XIX, en el que gracias a los descubrimientos y avances en la ciencia, se pudo realizar de manera exitosa la primera transfusión vena a vena (James Blundell). Se trabajó en un método de transfusión directo y se empezaron a solucionar los problemas de incompatibilidad, gracias al descubrimientos de los grupos sanguíneos ABO por Karl Landsteiner, y posteriormente el factor Rh, además de solventar los problemas de coagulación. Como consecuencia de la Primera Guerra Mundial se empezaron a establecer los primeros depósitos de sangre, surgiendo así los bancos de hemocomponentes. Los descubrimientos fueron sucediéndose durante el siglo XX y XXI, convirtiendo la medicina transfusional en una técnica exitosa capaz de preservar vidas. |
