La obra de Giuseppe Castiglione: En Busca de una Síntesis entre el Arte de China y Occidente

Abstract

A primera vista, China y Occidente podría parecer que poseen una cultura, unas tradiciones y, por tanto, unas expresiones artísticas completamente opuestas. A pesar de esta afirmación ser, en algunos aspectos, cierta, la tendencia a la globalización es imparable; prácticamente ninguna cultura ha conseguido sobreponerse a este proceso. Tras el declive del Renacimiento a comienzos del siglo XVII, surge una nueva tendencia a la renovación artística que fue aprovechada por los misioneros jesuitas quienes, siendo conocedores del interés del emperador Kangxi por las ciencias y técnicas artísticas occidentales, introdujeron la perspectiva y el realismo europeo en la corte Qing. Giuseppe Castiglione fue uno de los primeros artistas en llevar estas técnicas europeas a la corte china, por lo que su figura se torna de gran relevancia a la hora de analizar cómo se produjo una fusión cultural tan potente en las obras pictóricas y arquitectónicas cortesanas Qing durante el siglo XVIII. Si bien es cierto que Castiglione no fue el único occidental en la corte, su talento e ingenio le permitieron crear un estilo artístico propio que mezclaba los aspectos clave de ambas culturas, dando un lugar a una hibridación artística respetuosa con la cultura del país anfitrión y fiel a su formación europea que perduraría incluso tras su muerte.

At first glance, China and the West might appear to have a completely opposite culture, traditions, and therefore artistic expressions. Despite this claim being true (at least in some respects) the trend towards globalization is unstoppable; very few cultures have managed to avoid this process. After the decline of the Renaissance at the beginning of the seventeenth century, a new trend to artistic renewal emerged that was taken advantage of by the Jesuit missionaries who, being aware of the Kangxi Emperor´s interest in Western artistic sciences and techniques, introduced European perspective and realism to the Qing court. Giuseppe Castiglione was one of the first artists to bring these European techniques to the Chinese court, so his figure gains a great relevance when it comes to analyzing how such a powerful cultural fusion took place in Qing courtly pictorial and architectural works during the eighteenth century. While it is true that Castiglione was not the only Westerner at court, his talent and ingenuity allowed him to create his own artistic style that mixed the key aspects of both cultures, thus originating an artistic hybridization respectful of the culture of the host country and faithful to his European formation that would last even after his death.
