Japanism has had a prominent influence on the European artistic avant-garde. After the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), Japan began to export pieces of art to Europe that became one of the sources of inspiration and fascination for the renewal of European art at that time. In this work we want to address what Japanism meant in Europe during the artistic avant-gardes of the late 19th and 20th centuries; expose which Japanese artistic manifestations influenced European art; and to point out which European artists were most impregnated with this influence. The results show that this cultural encounter through art supposed a great assimilation of Japanese techniques and themes by European artists. However, certain disagreements also occurred mainly due to difficulties in understanding Japanese artistic manifestations within the framework of their culture and spiritual values. |
