What is an emotion? Are they the same? The answer is no. In this paper we will start by pondering on the nature of emotions, how have they been seen from ancient times up to the present, their function, etc. Afterwards, we'll show the differences between emotion and feeling. Furthermore, we'll focus on the study of the three negative emotions that affect human being, namely fear, sadness and shame. Generally speaking, they are deemed negative because they emerge as physiological processer which trigger automatic and unconscious behaviors of escape from a certain stimulus, object or situation that is or could be physically or emotionally harmfull. Only when someone experiments and is aware of one of those three emotions can they question about what they felt, meditating and managing it. This process of well awareness of the emotion is called feeling, and in the cases of fear, sadness and shame, they are formed as escape feelings. |
