Human beings have always tried to make a definition of their essence by differentiating themselves form ‘others’. Long time ago this ‘other’ was the animal but nowadays the technological development has given birth to an “other” so far unknown: the robot. This appearance makes us wonder whether there is a distinctive human characteristic which can help us differentiate human form droids, and if it is the case, if emotion, emotion expression specifically, can play this role adequately. In a try to elucidate this problem, we will enquire into the main emotions theories and then pay special attention to Mitchell Green’s view about self-expression. Subsequently, we will compare Green’s perspective with those from Rowland Stout and David Velleman in a try to answer the question we have just raised. Finally, we will see the role of emotions as meeting point between the several dimensions that constitute human beings in Rodriguez Valls view of emotions. |
