This paper considers the problem of gravitation in the transition from 19th to 20th century, through the analysis of Poincaré’s course “Les limites de la loi de Newton”. This paper considers the problem of gravitation in the transition from 19th to 20th century, through the analysis of Poincaré’s course “Les limites de la loi de Newton”. Here I will only describe the main observational anomalies that put into question the inverse square law. This characterization of the limits of Newton’s law illustrates that Poincaré’s work is not only a contribution to study the problem, but also an undoubtedly useful historical tool given the scrutiny of difficulties and solutions provided by several authors that he offered in that course. Besides, the awareness of the observational problems is essential to understand the later development of such an important topic as gravitation and also to challenge common histories of science that present the transition from Newtonian to relativistic physics as a radical change. |
