El sector periodístico de la prensa está sumido en una profunda transformación, desde hace años, por concluir su transición desde el formato papel hacia el mundo digital. La llegada de internet supuso una revolución estructural en las cabeceras periodísticas: la difusión de ejemplares en papel empezó a disminuir y, como consecuencia, la caída de la inversión publicitaria en los periódicos y el aumento del paro en la profesión. En cambio, las audiencias de las ediciones web fueron creciendo exponencialmente –alcanzando niveles históricos-, aunque el lector accedía de forma gratuita. El reto de directivos y editores por adaptar las redacciones al formato digital y por monetizar las audiencias de internet, a la par que se atravesaba una de las peores crisis económicas (2008), ha sido mayúsculo y ha dejado muchas consecuencias en el camino. Para sobrevivir, los medios han ido cediendo paulatinamente su poder a las élites políticas y económicas, mermando de forma considerable la libertad e independencia del periodismo, así como la confianza de la ciudadanía y, en definitiva, la credibilidad del periodismo. Durante los últimos años, unos pocos medios de la prensa española (Ej: El Español, eldiario.es, El Mundo) han ido imitando algunas estrategias para combatir los problemas de financiación, como la implantación de muros de pago, alianzas entre diferentes medios y acuerdos económicos con las plataformas (Google y Facebook), adoptadas previamente por los medios de referencia mundial (Ej: The New York Times, The Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post). En este sentido, la situación de incertidumbre generada en el año 2020 por la pandemia del COVID-19 ha sido definitiva en el lanzamiento de estos nuevos modelos por la mayoría de la prensa española, que pretende resurgir de su letargo dejando atrás la era de la gratuidad y el clickbait, y recuperando el terreno perdido de la libertad crítica y la independencia económica. |
