Due to the inevitable depletion of fossil fuels and their negative impact on the environment, hydrogen is presented as an efficient and versatile energy vector capable of storing energy from renewable energy sources, which makes it a completely clean and environmentally compatible fuel. It shows the evolution of the applications related to this chemical element throughout history and how many countries around the world are currently committed to the research and development of hydrogen fuel cells. The aim of this work is to carry out a detailed analysis of automotive propulsion systems based on fuel cells. For this purpose, the use of all the components belonging to the propulsion system is studied. Among them, the importance of the fuel cell stands out, whose operation is explained in more detail. Once the use of fuel cells in the automotive sector has been analyzed, their current manufacturing, infrastructure and fuel costs are evaluated, with the aim of showing viable alternatives at present and, thanks to their wide margin for improvement, their positive projection and implementation in certain types of transport sectors. At the same time, a comparison is made between other emission-free vehicle alternatives such as electric cars. Finally, using experimental polarization curves obtained from previous works, a study of how operating and design conditions affect stack and fuel cell system costs is carried out, calculating the number of fuel cells required for each operating condition and concluding which are the parameters that optimize this cost. |
