Es frenética la desbandada del ejército inglés hacia Astorga y Galicia y no menos acuciante la persecución francesa, espoleada por el propio emperador. Fuentes principales para conocer la marcha de Benavente a Astorga, son, entre otras, García Fuertes (1999-2000), Martín Benito (2004), Casado y Carreira (1985), Del Prado (2013). Villar Hidalgo (1998) publicó en estas mismas páginas una síntesis sobre la retirada de Benavente a Astorga, que puede usarse como introducción. El recorrido de la tropa viene a coincidir en esta etapa con la calzada romana entre Mérida y Astorga (Rabanal 1994-1995) |
