This article proposes a reading of the first part of the mythological fable of La Filomenafrom the standpoint of the theme of passions. It is suggested that Lope used various strategies therein to adapt the old tale to the passionate grammar of his time. On the one hand, he made the affective interweaving of the characters more complex, especially that of Tereo, thus bestowing him with a passionate tension that is absent in Ovidio and his translators from the 16th century. On the other hand, he representedthe abominable acts of rape, mutilation, and infanticide through different means of distancing or softening, with the purpose of tempering the cruelty of the old tale and bringing about an emotive response that blends commiseration with delight. This artistic option was defended by Lope in the ékphrasisof the embroidery created by Filomena, a metapoetic fragment of great relevance for the redemption of his courtesan poetry. |
