Effects of an exercise program with augmented reality on functional fitness and physical activity of community-dwelling older adults
(Frontiers, 2025) Ferreira, Soraia; Marmeleira, José; Pozo Cruz, Jesús del; Leite, Nilton; Bernardino, Alexandre; Moradell, Ana; Raimundo, Armando; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte; Universidad de Sevilla. HUM1055: Epidemiology of Physical Activity and Fitness Across Lifespan
Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of a multimodal program using augmented reality on the functional fitness and physical activity of older adults living in the community. Method: Seventy-eight older adults living in the community participated in this study. Participants were divided into three groups: a control group that maintained their usual activities, and two experimental groups, one with multimodal training (EG1) and the other with multimodal training combined with augmented reality (EG2). Participants were assessed at baseline and post-intervention, after 12 weeks. Functional fitness was assessed using the Rikli and Jones Senior Fitness Test, handgrip strength, the functional reach test, and the Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale. Physical activity was measured using accelerometry. Results: In EG1, lower limb flexibility, agility, cardiorespiratory fitness, and balance improved significantly between baseline and the 12-week outcome (p ≤ 0.001 for all). In EG2, improvements were observed in upper and lower limb strength, lower limb flexibility, agility, cardiorespiratory fitness, handgrip strength, and balance (p < 0.05 for all). Sedentary behavior increased in EG1 after the intervention. The clinical effect sizes of the interventions were large for balance (ES = 1.19) in EG1 and for upper limb strength (ES = 1.24) in EG2, and medium for cardiorespiratory fitness (ES = 0.74), agility (ES = 0.50), and lower limb flexibility (ES = 0.65) in EG1, and lower limb strength (ES = 0.61) and cardiorespiratory fitness (ES = 0.79) in EG2. Conclusion: Both intervention programs led to improvements in several functional domains. However, the multimodal training combined with augmented reality program showed improvements across more domains, resulting in greater changes. Physical activity did not show significant improvements.

Effects of a physical trainning program on cognitive and physical performance and health-related variables in professional esports players: A pilot study
(2024) Sanz Matesanz, Manuel; Martínez Aranda, Luis Manuel; Gea García, Gemma María; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte; Universidad de Sevilla. HUM1092: Investigación en Actividad Física, Calidad de Vida y Educación Física
The present study focused on the effects of a physical training program on physical- and psychological-related variables in professional esports players. Five professional League of Legends (LOL) players belonging to the highest national category participated in this study. Data were obtained before and after a 5 h virtual training session (acute), as well as before and after an 8-week intervention period, focused on decreasing the impact of fatigue on players’ health and performance. The results showed that a complete virtual training session influences their performance, decreasing jump height and joint mobility (p < 0.01), as well as increasing perceived physical and cognitive exertion by 76.9% (p < 0.01) and 166.67% on the “Rating of Fatigue” scale (p = 0.002). Moreover, the intervention was able to reduce the impact of fatigue (30.8% and 43.3% reduction in cognitive and overall fatigue, respectively, p < 0.05), improving, at the same time, the amount of muscle mass by 2%, jumping ability by 9.8% to 21%, and strength levels in various exercises by 63% to 173% (p < 0.01). The implementation of a physical training program is capable of reducing the players’ fatigue perception, improving their physical conditioning and health status, and decreasing the injury risk

Commentaries: An International Survey of Sports Coaches’ Knowledge, Understanding, and Definitions of Physical Literacy
(International Society for Comparative Physical Education and Sport, 2024) Ries, Francis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte; Universidad de Sevilla. HUM962: Sport and Physical Activity from a Multidisciplinary Perspective
Physical literacy (PL) has always been seen as a valued goal of sports, whether it is the school physical education curriculum, sports training, ormass sports. However, definitions of specific kernels of PL can be di different. As early as the 1980s, the term PL entered the field of British sports research, spreading to Europe, North America, and further afield (Bailey, 2020). In the present article, the authors offer an in-depth discussion of the phrase. At that time, the article analyses PL at the level of sports philosophy. It comprehensively assessed the complex concept through literature collection and expert opinions. While this article used a version of an interview method, it also attempted to clarify and refine the concept of PL beyond accounts like "exercise ability," "health promotion exercise," and aspects of phenomenology. At the same time, it also uses interview subjects brought into the public's view from the perspective of professional practitioners for content processing about the PL three-layer network meaning model, which can be more intuitive under practical use. The uses of the phrase PL here focus on different areas and regions between various subsets. It gives a new practical and theoretical reference value for future research on PL. In addition, the paper contributes to understanding the development of basic motor skills and highlights the need for more serious consideration of the relationship between PL and academic theory. However, this study also has shortcomings. In the sampling approach, the coaches are selected using a convenience sampling form, and most of them are football coaches, so the obtained data have a specific direction or particularity. Future studies must address this and include coaches from other sports

Cluster sets lead to better performance maintenance and minimize training-induced fatigue than traditional sets
(Frontiers Media SA, 2024) Páez Maldonado, José Antonio; Cornejo Daza, Pedro Jesús; Sánchez Valdepeñas, Juan; Sánchez Moreno, Miguel; Piqueras Sanchiz, Francisco; Ortega Becerra, Manuel; Pareja Blanco, Fernando; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects on mechanical, neuromuscular, metabolic, and muscle contractile responses todifferent set configurations in full-squat (SQ). Methods: Twenty-two men performed three SQ sessions that consisted of 3 setsof 12 repetitions with 60% 1RM with 4 minutes inter-set rests: a) traditional set (TS): no rest within the set; b) cluster-6 (CS6): a 30 seconds intraset rest after the 6th repetition of each set; and c) cluster-2 (CS2): a 30 seconds intraset rest every 2 repetitions. Mechanical (i.e., force, velocity, and power) and electromyography (EMG) values were recorded for every repetition. A battery of tests was performed: a) tensiomyography (TMG), b) blood lactate c),countermovement jump (CMJ), d) maximal isometric SQ, and e) performance with the load that resulted in a velocity of 1 m·s−1 at baseline (V1-load). Repeated measured ANOVA analyses were used to compare the 3 protocols. Results: As the number of intraset rests increased (TS < CS6 < CS2), mechanical performance was better maintained (p < 0.01) and EMG variables were less altered (p = 0.05). At post, CS2 and CS6 displayed lower lactate concentration, lesser reductions in CMJ height, and smaller alterations in TMG-derived variables than TS (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The introduction of short and frequent intraset rest periods during resistance exercise alleviates training-induced fatigue, resulting in better maintenance of performance. This approach can be applied during the in-season period when minimizing fatigue is a priority

Effects of analogy and explicit instructional strategies on affective responses during lifting tasks among novice exercisers
(Springer, 2025) Carnero Díaz, Ángel; Pecci Barea, Francisco Javier; Kaplánová, Adriana; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte; Universidad de Sevilla. CTS972: Análisis Biológico y Funcional del Ejercicio Físico
The instruction given before a lifting task could modulate the affective responses of the participants in a training program. This study aimed to analyze the effects of two types of instruction—analogy and explicit—on the affective responses of novice exercisers during lifting tasks. Twenty-one subjects participated in the present study. A crossover design was employed, in which all participants experienced both instructional conditions in a randomized within-subjects approach. Instruction was provided before performing each lifting task. On day 1, familiarization was done about questionnaires and tasks. On days 2 and 3, participants performed the lifting tasks under their assigned instructional condition, with counterbalanced order. Affective responses such as preferences, self-efficacy, and feeling scale were assessed after the lifting task. Participants equally preferred analogy and explicit instruction. Nonetheless, in those participants who preferred analogy instruction, the force applied was reduced. Self-efficacy improved with both instructions (p < 0.001), while the feeling scale showed no significant effects (p = 0.157). In conclusion, both instructions enhanced self-efficacy, but only analogy instruction reduced force production. Providing instruction during exercise enhances the overall experience, particularly for novice participants, by offering guidance and increasing confidence

Evaluating university sport science students' perceptions following a service-learning intervention in high schools
(Universidad de La Coruña, 2025) Pecci Barea, Francisco Javier; Galiano De La Rocha, Carlos; Carnero Díaz, Ángel; Gil Delgado, José Luis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte; Universidad de Sevilla. CTS972: Análisis Biológico y Funcional del Ejercicio Físico
This study examined university and high school students’ perceptions following a biomechanics-focused service-learning intervention. Five sports science students taught biomechanics to five high school students through four sessions combining theory and practice, concluding with a conference presentation. Students were asked how they felt about the program across basic, pedagogical, and organizational dimensions, and self-assessment reliability was calculated. Both groups reported high satisfaction, with scores averaging over 3 out of 4. High school students demonstrated reliable self-assessment, reflecting effective knowledge retention. Findings suggest that service-learning is an effective pedagogy in biomechanics, enhancing comprehension of complex concepts and fostering positive interconnections between university and high school students

Geocultural differences in preschooler sleep profiles and family practices: an analysis of pooled data from 37 countries
(Oxford University Press, 2025) Zhang, Zhiguang; Abdeta, Chalchisa; Chelly, Mohamed Souhaiel; Pozo Cruz, Jesús del; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte; Universidad de Sevilla. HUM1055: Epidemiology of Physical Activity and Fitness Across Lifespan
Study Objectives: To examine (1) multidimensional sleep profiles in preschoolers (3–6 years) across geocultural regions and (2) differences in sleep characteristics and family practices between Majority World regions (Pacific Islands, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Latin America) and the Minority World (the Western world). Methods: Participants were 3507 preschoolers from 37 countries. Nighttime sleep characteristics and nap duration (accelerometer: n = 1950) and family practices (parental questionnaire) were measured. Mixed models were used to estimate the marginal means of sleep characteristics by region and examine the differences. Results: Geocultural region explained up to 30% of variance in sleep characteristics. A pattern of short nighttime sleep duration, low sleep efficiency, and long nap duration was observed in Eastern Europe, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia. The second pattern, with later sleep midpoints and greater night-to-night sleep variability, was observed in South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Latin America. Compared to the Minority World, less optimal sleep characteristics were observed in several Majority World regions, with medium-to-large effect sizes (∣d∣=0.48–2.35). Several Majority World regions reported more frequent parental smartphone use during bedtime routines (Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia: 0.77–0.99 units) and were more likely to have electronic devices in children’s bedroom (Eastern Europe, Latin America, South Asia: OR = 5.97–16.57) and co-sleeping arrangement (Asia, Latin America: OR = 7.05–49.86), compared to the Minority World. Conclusions: Preschoolers’ sleep profiles and related family practices vary across geocultural regions, which should be considered in sleep health promotion initiatives and policies

High level of soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors is associated with lower residual diuresis volume in patients on hemodialysis: An exploratory study
(Public Library Science, 2025) Gonçalves, Gabriele Teixeira; Mello Santos, Luciana Martins de; Figueiredo Scheidt, Pedro Henrique; Chaves Freitas, Jaqueline de Paula; Santos, Jousielle Márcia; Santos, Joyce Noelly Vitor; Silva Junior, Fidelis Antônio da; Lopes Alves, Frederico; Gomes Brandão, Vanessa; Barroso Maciel, Emílio Henrique; S.M Prates, Maria Cecília; Sañudo Corrales, Francisco de Borja
Patients on hemodialysis commonly present with elevated inflammatory markers. It is noteworthy, however, that higher levels of these markers may deteriorate resid- ual renal function in in these individuals. Further investigation is essential to clarify the potential link between systemic chronic inflammatory parameters and residual diuresis volume in this population, particularly when accounting for confounding variables such as body composition. This study aimed to explore the possible rela- tionship between inflammatory parameters and residual diuresis volume in patients on hemodialysis

Effects of a 6-month rowing training program in breast cancer survivors
(Public Library Science, 2025) Real Pérez, Mateo; Fernández García, José Carlos; Gavala González, Juan; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte
The purpose of this longitudinal study was to determine the effects of a rowing training program on physical fitness and body composition in female breast cancer survivors (56.78 ± 6.38 years). Over six months, the participants (n = 40) performed two training sessions per week for an average of 75 minutes, combining resistance and muscle strength exercises with rowing. To evaluate the impact of the program, physical fitness tests and anthropometric measurements were carried out before and after the training protocol. The results show statistically significant improvements in measures such as weight (-1.84 kg), BMI (-0.7 kg/m2), hip (-3.24 cm) and waist circumference (-2.45 cm). In addition, variables associated with physical fitness also improved including leg strength (3.04 cm), dominant handgrip strength (4.24 kgf), non-dominant handgrip strength (3.49 kgf), aerobic endurance (78.35 m) and muscle flexibility (3.96 cm). We can therefore conclude that a rowing-based exercise program is an effective strategy to improve physical fitness in this type of population, yielding improvements in both anthropometric measurements and basic physical capacity variables, essential factors for better health and quality of life

Body Asymmetry and Sports Specialization: An Exploratory Anthropometric Comparison of Adolescent Canoeists and Kayakers
(MDPI, 2025) Herrera Amante, Carlos Abraham; Carvajal Veitía, William; Yáñez Sepúlveda, Rodrigo; Alacid, Fernando; Gavala González, Juan; López Gil, José Francisco; Olivares Arancibia, Jorge; Ramos García, César Octavio; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Educación Física y Deporte
Background/Objectives: The evaluation of body asymmetry between the right and left sides of the body is crucial in the context of sports because of its potential impact on performance and injury prevention. This study analyzed the anthropometric differences between the right and left sides of the body in adolescent (13.0 [2.0] years) male canoeists and kayakers from Spain. This study aimed to explore the asymmetries associated with these disciplines. Methods: Anthropometric assessments were carried out on 27 male adolescents (13 canoeists and 14 kayakers). A total of 58 anthropometric variables were assessed, including 23 pairs of bilateral variables and 12 unilateral measurements. The evaluations included basic measures, skinfolds, girths, lengths, and breadths. Relative differences between sides were calculated via the bilateral asymmetry index (%BAI). Nonparametric tests, such as theWilcoxon signed-rank test for within-group comparisons and the Mann– Whitney U test for between-group comparisons, were applied. Results: Comparisons between body sides within the groups revealed significant asymmetries in the subscapular skinfold (p = 0.010) in canoeists and in the mid-thigh girth (p = 0.041) in kayakers. Among the groups, differences were found in the subscapular skinfold (p = 0.010) and the bicep skinfold (p = 0.038) on the right side. Conclusions: Although significant differences were found in some variables, no distinctive profile of the differences between canoeists and kayakers was established in the categories analyzed. These results suggest that, in general, body asymmetries do not significantly distinguish between these disciplines within the sample studied. Further research is needed to better understand the implications of these differences for performance and injury prevention in specific adolescent sports contexts

Adventure perdagogical model as a growing concept in physical activity
(Maringá State University, 2024) Caballero Blanco, Pablo; Herrera Pombero, Carlos; Bento, Pedro; Universidad de Sevilla.
