Efficiency of information and communication technology adoption by entrepreneurs
(Emerald, 2025) Velasco Morente, Francisco; Berbegal Zaragoza, Vanesa; Srivastava, Sumita; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España; Junta de Andalucía
Purpose – This study seeks to improve the understanding of the motivation driving the entrepreneurs of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to integrate ICTs and why this process is easier for some. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) is a suitable framework for this analysis. Our research aims to establish an explanatory typology based on the optimization of individual perceptions of entrepreneurs and usage intentions which enables identification of those groups that possess a greater intention to use ICTs in their businesses. This sheds light on how these factors influence their information and communication technology (ICT) adoption intentions within their businesses. Design/methodology/approach – This study adopts an alternative approach and methodology to contribute new insights into academic discourse regarding the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Building upon the theoretical foundation of the UTAUT, the present study pioneers the application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to a dataset encompassing 436 Spanish entrepreneurs. The objective is to examine the combination of diverse UTAUT perceptions that optimise the intention to implement ICTs in their companies while minimising anxiety associated with the adoption of new technologies (the outputs). Based on the results obtained, an explanatory typology is established that combines perceptions and usage intentions. Findings – When applied to our group of entrepreneurs, DEA reveals that certain individuals can optimise their intentions with their current perception levels. This discovery has enabled us to create an explanatory typology through an examination of the efficiency of various perception-intention and/or anxiety combinations. Our proposed typology aims to shed light on the debate as to why not all perceptions translate into intentions and why certain entrepreneurs have a greater intention to use ICTs. An investigation of these efficient entrepreneurs reveals a wide range of combinations, which encompasses both those in harmony with effective usage behaviour and those deviating from such behaviour. Research limitations/implications – DEA provides a snapshot of efficiency at a specific point in time and does not account for dynamic changes or adjustments over time, and DEA efficiency scores are relative measures that depend on the efficiency of other decision-making units in the dataset. The identification of appropriate benchmark units for comparison can be challenging, especially in heterogeneous datasets and cross-cultural analysis. In this respect, the UTAUT literature is lacking in cross-technology and cross-cultural comparisons. Practical implications – Our methodology and results have implications for business management, business accelerators and economic policy. A detailed study of these clusters could reveal potential barriers and obstacles hindering the effective implementation of ICTs in MSMEs, thereby enabling researchers to focus on individuals who do not align with the model. Entrepreneurs classified in the most unfavourable typologies can take steps to enhance their perceptions, while administration and business accelerators can focus their efforts on these entrepreneurs. Originality/value – The application of the UTAUT model on individual entrepreneurs receives limited coverage in the existing literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to utilise a DEA methodology within the framework of the UTAUT model (in contrast to the prevalent use of structural equation modelling in previous studies related to UTAUT). This analysis contributes fresh empirical evidence to the academic discourse on technology adoption models among individual entrepreneurs. Our methodology is a tool that reveals potential barriers and obstacles in individual perceptions that hinder the effective implementation of ICT in certain types of entrepreneurs.

Artificial generation of survey data on the expected bitterness of beer
(Elsevier, 2025-05) Ruiz Gándara, África; Casales García, Vicente; González Abril, Luis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España
A serious problem in many surveys is its insufficient size, which implies that the inference process is inadequate to carry out the generalization to the population. A survey with 195 participants on the expected bitterness in beer based on the shape of the glass and the color of the beer is considered in this paper. A Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), a tool from Machine Learning, is used in order to increase the size of the survey. Hence, more than three thousand synthetic items of data were generated by the GAN. In order to assess the quality of the synthetic data, an index of the goodness of fit of the synthetic data relative to the real data is provided using the values of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. A comparative analysis with a statistical tool of data generation is also carried out, and the index proposed together with the ANOVA test are utilized to assess both tools. It is worth bearing in mind that, although GANs are based on deep learning where a large dataset is usually required to carry out an implementation, this paper provides very promising results with only a small dataset.

How Does Humane Orientation Contribute to Digital Entrepreneurship Use Intention? A Gender Perspective
(Springer, 2024-05) Önder, Gökhan Ö; Fernández Serrano, José; Liñán, Francisco; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICINN). España
Information and communication technology (ICT) is one of the vital resources for entrepreneurs as they start and develop new ventures. Therefore, it is important to understand the ICT adoption patterns of individuals. In particular, recent research has emphasized the differences between specific entrepreneurial orientations (such as humane entrepreneurship) or those based on gender. The aim of this chapter is to help understanding the role of a humane orientation in the intention to use ICT by taking into account gender differences as well. This is done through the adoption of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model and the concept of humane entrepreneurship. Partial Least Squares (PLS) was used to estimate the proposed model. The study sample consists of 1229 individuals living in Spain. The data have been collected through surveys. Based on the results, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence have a positive and significant effect on the intention to use ICT. Furthermore, the humane orientation positively affects the ICT use intention of individuals. The results also show that this latter effect is more prominent for women. Based on these results, policies and programs should be implemented to support and fund women’s humane entrepreneurial projects, since they are more likely to adopt ICT as an instrument. The inclusion of humane constructs in entrepreneurship education can help the emergence of new ventures that can produce technological solutions to global challenges. Additionally, ICT training for entrepreneurs can stress the UTAUT constructs such as performance benefits and ease of use to increase ICT use intention.

A DEA Approach for Evaluating the Labor Efficiency in the Rural Hotel Industry: A Case Study in Spain
(Institute for Tourism, 2022) Sánchez-Sánchez, Francisca J.; Sánchez-Sánchez, Ana M.; Pulido Pavón, Noemí; Borrero Molina, Diego Vicente; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
In this paper, labor efficiency in the rural hotel industry is analyzed while considering the characteristics regarding labor and infrastructure of the various Spanish provinces. The methodological procedure consisted of the analysis of 52 Spanish provinces. As analysis, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Multivariate Analysis have been used. Although rural tourism is consolidated in the Spanish holiday culture, the effect of labor efficiency on Spanish provinces is uneven. Performance depends on the geographical area; thus, labor efficiency is only achieved in Asturias and Balearic Islands, where rural tourism has a strong and positive impact on employment. The variable length of stay of the holiday period carries important weight for labor efficiency to be reached in said provinces. It can be observed that hotels located in places with charm and with special environmental protection contribute directly to the labor efficiency of the area due to the direct relationship between the area of protected land and the labor efficiency of the province. Several provincial groups are established with a variety of different characteristics, which confirms that the level of labor ef- ficiency in the sector has yet to be maximized.

Some Notes on the Gini Index and New Inequality Measures: The nth Gini Index
(MDPI, 2024-11) Gavilán Ruiz, José Manuel; Ruiz Gándara, África; Ortega Irizo, Francisco Javier; González Abril, Luis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España
A new family of inequality indices based on the deviation between the expected maximum and the expected minimum of random samples, called the nth Gini index is presented. These indices generalize the Gini index. At the same time, this family of indices and the S-Gini index are generalized by proposing the uv−Gini index, which turns out to be a convex combination of the S-Gini index and the Lorenz family of inequality measures. This family of Gini indices provides a methodology for achieving perfect equality in a given distribution of incomes. This is achieved through a series of successive and equal increases in the incomes of each individual.

Digital transformation of oral health care: measuring the digitalization of dental clinics
(Springer, 2024-06-12) Ahumada Servant, Pedro de; Martín Martín, Domingo; Romero Luna, Isidoro; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
The profound transformation of business and society as a whole, brought about by digitalization, calls for the development of business strategies to meet the challenges associated with digital disruption and to manage its marked impact on the competitiveness of organizations. To achieve this goal, it is essential to assess the extent of digital transformation (DT) within businesses, as a crucial initial step in charting the most effective path towards digitalization. Nevertheless, a limitation in the existing literature on digitalization in the healthcare sector is evident in the absence of quantifiable indicators that comprehensively measure and track the progress of DT across all facets of dental clinics. The objective of this paper is the construction of a digitalization indicator, the Dental Data Synthetic Index (DDSI), which allows the accurate measurement of progress in digital development levels within all areas of a dental organization. This instrument can be a useful tool for both diagnosis and digital planning in dental clinics. In this paper, the proposed indicator is supported by its application to a representative sample of dental clinics in Spain, obtained from a survey developed for this purpose.

Underemployment due to overeducation: An analysis of worker cooperatives versus conventional firms
(Sage, 2023) Valiente-Palma, Lidia; Pérez González, María Del Carmen; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
This research study analyses overeducation in worker cooperatives (WCs) compared to conventional firms (CFs) to determine whether there is any evidence to suggest that underemployment due to overeducation is less probable in WCs (where decisions are made democratically by worker members to maximise collective wellbeing) than in CFs in Spain. A total sample of 945 workers (315 worker members from WCs, 315 non-member workers from WCs and 315 workers from CFs) taken from the Continuous Working Life Sample from the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration was used. The methods applied in the study include regression line comparison between WCs and CFs and logistic regression analysis. The results show that the probability of underemployment due to overeducation may be lower in worker members from WCs than in workers from CFs. Nevertheless, this is not the case for non-member workers in WCs, who display a similar level of underemployment due to overeducation as workers in CFs. This study lays the foundation for research into underemployment due to overeducation in WCs, a topic which has not yet been explored.

The “business–territory” relationship of cooperative societies as compared to the conventional business sector in the region of Andalusia
(Wiley, 2020-12) Pérez González, María Del Carmen; Valiente-Palma, Lidia; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
The purpose of this study is to identify whether cooperativism in Andalusia is related to the territory in which it takes place. The discovery of a “cooperativism–territory” relationship is of particular interest, given Andalusia's significant territorial diversity and the ability of cooperative societies to adapt to different surroundings. Noteworthy among the results is the greater connection shown by cooperative societies to the area in which they carry out their activities, compared with that seen in the conventional business sector. As such, cooperative societies are strategic entities in terms of responding and adapting to the evolution of certain localized social needs emerging in the region of Andalusia.

Entrepreneurship and innovation in worker cooperatives and conventional firms: the role of external cooperation
(Springer, 2024) Santos Cumplido, Francisco Javier; Guzmán Alfonso, Carmen; Valiente-Palma, Lidia; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
Through the comparison of conventional firms (CFs) with worker cooperatives (WCs), which are a type of collective enterprise with significant experience in cooperation, this research aims to analyse the influence of external cooperation on the two most prominent factors for the success of enterprises: entrepreneurship and innovation. To this end, a research model is proposed based on contributions from the stakeholders’ perspective of the resourcebased view of the firm and tested with data from a survey conducted on WCs and CFs located in two Spanish regions with a long tradition in the cooperative movement. The results highlight that the influence of external cooperation on innovation performance is more relevant for WCs and demonstrate that these collective firms are not disadvantaged in innovation compared to CFs. Furthermore, the results suggest that WCs have a more remarkable ability to compete and cooperate simultaneously, that is, to coopete, due to their participative nature.

Departamento de Economía Aplicada I

Analysis of good practices of social impact measurement: the social balance sheet developed by the Spanish network of the social and solidarity economy
(Emerald, 2024) Guzmán Alfonso, Carmen; Correa, Irene; Valiente-Palma, Lidia; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
Purpose This study aims to analyse the good practices developed by the Spanish Social and Solidarity Network (one of the leading networks in the country) regarding its social balance sheet, created under the perspective of social and solidarity principles. This social balance sheet is implemented by its members for their self-evaluation. Design/methodology/approach By using a qualitative methodology based on triangulation, which includes a semi-structured interview with the manager of the social audit commission, the main good practices associated with this initiative of social impact measurement are attained. Moreover, two organisations implementing the social balance sheet have been analysed to obtain a complete perspective of the tool and the process developed by the network. Findings The main findings include: the social balance sheet dimensions are based on the social and solidarity principles, which enable companies to analyse the compliance of their activity with their philosophy; cooperation is crucial for the success of the tool; the efforts made by the network involve a range of different behaviours, all shared and published on social networks and the internet for free to diffuse the good practices of social impact measurement. Originality/value This research contributes to the literature on social entrepreneurship and social impact measurement by analysing the good practices regarding a social balance sheet, designed under the social and solidarity philosophy, whose procedure can serve as a reference for any other representative institutions or practitioners. From this view, this initiative can be considered a social innovation itself since it constitutes a step towards transforming society through the quantification of business activity from a more social perspective and through a process of participative governance by all the stakeholders involved.

Positions on regulations affecting auditing and nonauditing activities
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), 2014) López Gavira, María Rosario; Pérez López, José Ángel; Romero García, José Enrique; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Contabilidad y Economía Financiera; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
The change in regulations that occurred in Spain in the domain of auditing has led to the analysis of regulations according to the positions adopted by different groups involved in the auditing market. The purpose of this study was to investigate the positions taken by professionals involved in this sector regarding those aspects of the law that regulate the provision of services other than the auditing of annual accounts, with a view to obtaining relevant conclusions for the regulation of the auditing activity. Findings show the existence of three professional subgroups according to the level of global prohibition of the incompatibilities analyzed and the level of importance assigned to the prohibitions in two important groups of prohibitions. The difference between these professional groups is analyzed in terms of their level of prohibition in comparison with the law. Other results show the most important variables for measuring a firm’s degree of independence.

An action phase theory approach to the configuration of entrepreneurial goal and implementation intentions
(Emerald, 2024) Liñán, Francisco; Jaén Figueroa, Inmaculada; Domínguez Quintero, Ana María; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España
Purpose – This paper integrates the action phase theory (APT) and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to analyse the dynamic mechanisms involved in the configuration of goals and implementation intentions throughout the entrepreneurship process. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical analysis compares individuals in different phases of this process (not yet decided, potential and nascent entrepreneurs). A large sample of adults from Spain is analysed. Structural equation models and multi-group analysis (MGA) serve to test the hypotheses. Findings – The results confirm that perceived behavioural control (PBC) is the most influential antecedent of entrepreneurial goal intention (EGI) in pre-actional phases (undecided and potential entrepreneurs), whilst attitude towards entrepreneurship (ATE) takes this role during nascency. Subjective norms (SNs) are more important in Phase 1 (establishing the goal) and in Phase 3 (performing nascent behaviour). Originality/value – This study contributes to both the TPB and the APT. It provides the most relevant insight into the mental process that leads to starting up and helps explain certain previous conflicting results found in the literature. Additionally, it has important implications not only for theory building but also for support bodies and for entrepreneurship educators.

Post-visit and pre-visit tourist destination image through eWOM sentiment analysis and perceived helpfulness
(Emerald, 2016) González Rodríguez, María Rosario; Martínez Torres, María del Rocío; Toral, S. L.; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Administración de Empresas y Comercialización e Investigación de Mercados (Marketing); Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Economía Aplicada I; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Ingeniería Electrónica; Junta de Andalucía; Ministerio de Economía. España
Purpose – This paper aims to explore the image of travel destinations after the visit by analysing sentiment orientation of the online reviews, and how this orientation, as well as other electronic word of mouth (eWOM)’s credibility sources, can affect the perceived helpfulness of shared opinions measured through the helpfulness score. Design/methodology/approach – Tourist destinations are increasingly affected by travel-related information shared through the Web. More and more people first check the previous travel experiences of other people to build their own destination image and to help them in their choice of destination. This paper analyses the shared opinions related to the city of Barcelona in a well-known eWOM website. The reviewers’ opinion and the credibility sources of eWOM are extracted from the web using a webscraper, while the sentiment score to analyse the discourse orientation (positive vs negative) is calculated using computer-based sentiment analysis techniques. Findings – Online reviews’ users are reluctant to provide extreme polar opinions (very negative, very positive) to any travel subcategory (hotel, restaurant, attractions and night-life) of a tourist destination. The results obtained also reveal that eWOM’s perceived helpfulness grows with the expertise of the reviewer. However, the helpfulness score given to the reviews posted is not influenced by the sentiment orientation of the author’s opinion. Research limitations/implications – This research is limited to the case study of Ciao, which is a well-known consumer platform, and the city of Barcelona, which is a top touristic destination. However, the approach proposed can be easily extended to other similar consumer platforms and cities using the same methodology. Practical implications – Understanding the information posted in the media environment is a major concern in the field of marketing destination planning. Positive and negative eWOM offers potential consumers a clear picture on the tourist destination, and this information can be used by Destination Marketing Organisations to meet customers’ needs and expectations. The perceived helpfulness of reviews analysed in this paper can also help practitioners and scholars to understand those factors that make reviews more trustable. Originality/value – From a methodological point of view, the main contribution of this research is the utilisation of an unstructured approach to the measurement of the destination image based on the sentiment analysis of shared opinions. From a theoretical point of view, the study relates the post-visit destination image with the pre-visit image formation process, using the sentiment orientation of the former and the perceived helpfulness of the latter.

Departamento de Economía Aplicada I
