Throughout the Modern Age, numerous foods from America arrived at European tables and became essential ingredients in national cuisines. Various sources reflect this incorporation and art is not an exception. However, in order to introduce these humble and exotic products into paintings or decorative arts, they had to undergo a process of adaptation to specific artistic codes. A good example of this artistic process was the case of maize, a humble product that reached the status of a symbol of gods or the Virgin Mary. With the purpose of analysing this phenomenon, we will take as a basis its representation in the royal collections of the Habsburg Spain throughout this period. |
