Cardinal de Granvelle was one of the most notorious figures within European diplomacy in the 16th century, especially during Philip II’s reign. His political prominence could also be perceived on a cultural level. To illustrate Granvelle’s role as a collector, we will analyse his relationship with Stephanus Pighius, who was in charge of the cardinal’s personal libraries from 1557 to the early seventies. Besides this responsibility, he dedicated himself to increasing his patron’s antiquities collection, by purchasing them for Perrenot or even gifting them to him. In order to carry out such analysis, we will be particularly focusing on the case of an ancient silver vase, discovered in Arras, which inspired Pighius to publish his Mythologia (1559). |
