The provincial museums network, that emerged as a result of the disentailment processes carried out during the 19th century, were the only public cultural institutions of this type in most of the provincial capitals well into the 20th century. Although works of religious art from the suppressed monasteries and convents formed its seminal collections, from the mid-19th century began to include archaeological pieces due to the rise of interest in archaeology and archaeological excavations. This phenomenon will be studied through the case of León, a city with important Roman past. |
