Se conoce como Binge Drinking (BD) al consumo episódico excesivo de alcohol en forma de atracón, y actualmente, se trata de un patrón de consumo más prevalente en adolescentes que en adultos, considerándose un problema de salud pública, ya que la adolescencia constituye una etapa especialmente vulnerable a los efectos neurotóxicos del alcohol, convirtiéndose el BD, en un factor de riesgo para múltiples patologías a corto y largo plazo.
El metabolismo del alcohol, en especial cuando se consume a altas dosis, favorece la aparición de estrés oxidativo en los tejidos donde se metaboliza, por ejemplo, los riñones. Cuando los componentes de las células de la nefrona se oxidan, se altera su funcionalidad.
El ácido fólico (AF) es una vitamina con carácter antioxidante disminuida en pacientes alcohólicos. Por consiguiente, el objetivo del presente estudio es analizar si la suplementación con AF en ratas adolescentes expuestas a BD, mejora el balance oxidativo renal, midiendo la actividad de las enzimas antioxidantes; y su funcionalidad respecto al balance hídrico-salino, evaluando los niveles de sodio y aldosterona en suero, y el aclaramiento de creatinina.
Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el consumo agudo de alcohol en forma de BD provoca un desbalance oxidativo en los riñones, siendo la glutatión peroxidasa (GPx) la enzima más afectada, disminuyendo drásticamente su actividad. Además, el BD compromete la función renal, disminuyendo la Tasa de Filtración Glomerular y produciendo hipernatremina, debido al aumento de los niveles de aldosterona en suero.
La suplementación con AF ha resultado ser eficaz, pues restablece el equilibrio oxidativo evitando la oxidación lipídica, y regula los niveles de aldosterona, mejorando el balance hídrico-salino.
En conclusión, la suplementación con AF podría ser una terapia beneficiosa en adolescentes que consumen alcohol en forma de BD, ya que contrarresta los daños que provoca esta droga en los riñones.
