// Following an extensive review of different maps, the author presents a series of some of the first maps to incorporate the routes of roads. These were made between 1680 and 1711 by prestigious cartographers and engineers such as Visscher, Allard, Halma, Moll or Pennier. The analysis is based on the map representation criteria employed and comparison with the earlier road guides of Villuga (1546) and Meneses (1576) as possible sources of information. In order to provide a more precise approach, the area of the analysis was restricted to the current territory of Extremadura, an area in which important events took place that left their mark on the cartography of the region.
