The Government's communication strategy during the State of Alarm put five technical managers, three of them in uniform, at the head of the daily press conferences of the Technical Management Committee of the coronavirus. The spokespersons for the Guardia Civil, National Police and Armed Forces were highly trained in their respective fields, but they were not communication experts. This lack of communication capacity brought more problems than benefits to the government, as some of the statements made by these spokespersons led to an enormous outcry and much criticism of the government. Just one week after the most controversial statements, the end of the press conferences of the uniformed personnel was announced. This research aims to analyze the speeches given by these spokespersons over 39 days, from March 16th to April 25th, as well as to find out the public's and political leaders' opinion about it expressed on Twitter and in other surveys. All this in order to know if the Government's communication strategy during the pandemic was successful or not. |
