En los últimos años, el término burnout, o su traducción al español: síndrome del quemado, ha recibido la atención de numerosos investigadores, debido a la frecuencia en que se presenta y a sus consecuencias. Aunque este síndrome puede darse en muchas profesiones que supongan contacto constante con el cliente, su prevalencia es mucho más alta en aquellas que suponen servicios humanos (Brake y Yedama, 1995; García Izquierdo, 1991a), es decir de aquellas profesiones que deben mantener una relación continua de ayuda hacia el destinatario del servicio: médicos, enfermeras, psicólogos, profesores, asistentes sociales, policías, etc. En el presente trabajo, medimos la incidencia de este síndrome en el colectivo de profesores universitarios de contabilidad, así como la incidencia de un conjunto de factores que aparecen vinculados al mismo, utilizando en una prueba piloto la versión española del MBI estándar de Maslach y Jackson (Seisdedos, 1997). De los resultados de este estudio piloto y los comentarios de los profesores que participaron en él, se deduce que el instrumento estándar no recoge los que puede ser la mayor fuente de estrés en el profesor universitario. A raíz de los resultados desarrollamos una adaptación del MBI, en la que se divide la incidencia en el síndrome burnout de las dos mayores áreas de trabajo de un profesor universitario: docencia e investigación. El nuevo instrumento proporciona, de esta forma, dos juegos de medidas, cada una asociada a una de estas áreas. Los resultados obtenidos sobre una muestra nacional de profesores universitarios de contabilidad indican que la investigación se constituye en una fuente de estrés mucho más fuerte que la docencia. Otros de los resultados obtenidos son la alta incidencia del síndrome en los profesores más jóvenes y en las mujeres. |
