During the 2017 Spanish edition of Big Brother, an unprecedented event in television history took place as, allegedly, one of the participants sexually abused another participant. After the ejection of that participant, the investigation of these accusations stayed under the radar for almost two years, until the allegedly abused participant took part in an interview. As a result, the investigation appeared in the mainstream media, resulting in a conflict between the different Spanish mainstream media companies. This study attempts to investigate further into the events that happened and study how these events were reported in the online newspaper El Confidencial, which has paid the most attention to this case, and determine whether or not it has been the intention of this newspaper to further increase sensationalism around this case. 5 Thanks to this analysis it has been determined that El Confidencial has not been completely objective in the reporting of these events since, amongst many factors, this newspaper has used irrelevant topics, even breaking into the private life of some of the people implicated in this case, and has repeatedly used sensationalist titles to attract more readers. |
