Inciertos orientalismos en la arquitectura chilena (1862-1916): del neoárabe al neovenecianismo

Abstract

Determinados edificios chilenos de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX fueron calificados por la historiografía como orientales. Este trabajo investiga la necesidad de concretar los calificativos estilísticos del neoárabe y el neovenecianismo en las construcciones de Santiago, Valparaíso y Viña del Mar. Resulta obligatorio estudiar la formación de los arquitectos, los referentes europeos que les sirvieron de inspiración para sus construcciones en América del Sur, además de las vías por las que dichos modelos se trasladaron a Chile. Se concluye que Oriente, como categoría de análisis, resulta demasiado ambigua, siendo necesario concretar las referencias que inspiraron los edificios que se estudian en este trabajo.

Some Chilean buildings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were described by historiography as oriental. This work investigates the need to concretize the stylistic terms of Neo-Moorish and Neo-Venetian in the constructions of Santiago, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. We must study the formation of the architects, the European referents who served as inspiration for their constructions in South America, in addition to the routes by which these models were transferred to Chile. It is concluded that the oriental, as a category of analysis, is too ambiguous, being necessary to specify the references that inspired the buildings studied in this work.
