This article is a professional reflection that takes the complementarity between environmental education and public participation and the need to move towards new educational perspective narrow ties between the environment and human coexistence towards a more tailored to the needs current planet. Environmental education should promote the acquisition of an awareness, values and behaviors that benefit the effective participation of citizens in the decision-making process regarding the environment in which we live. And, environmental education and citizen participation are two of the biggest socio- environmental concerns and two of the great challenges of the XXI century. This document aims to provide information and ideas on the importance of environmental education programs to encourage citizen participation in the line of a global citizenship, demonstrating that environmental education and education for citizenship are closely related.
