«Beyond protocol: Strategies to fi ght truancy in Andalusian Schools of Preferential Educational Attention». Th is paper on truancy, specifi cally on the types of hands-on strategies that, surpassing offi cial protocols, characterize the daily interactions between the truants’ families and school agents in those areas where this problem is most present: Preferential Educational Attention Areas in Andalusia. Social workers, advisors, teachers and other school agents that deal with «vulnerable children» in these types of schools spend a signifi cant amount of their working time managing truancy by implementing a wide array of strategies that range from incentivizing, controlling, sanctioning and negotiating with the truants’ families. Besides identifying such strategies, through qualitative techniques, this paper explores both the external factors and the professionals’ perception schemes that determine the type of strategy that is implemented in each case of truancy
