“Democratic schools”, named as such by Apple and Beane, meet three main criteria: researching as an adventure (which means working by projects and this implies a very intensive use of a whole array of libraries and new technologies and also a fluid and close relationship with school environment), the making of deliberative settings (through classroom assemblies, public explanation of news and, all in all, cooperative learning) and the promotion of a democratic coexistence (through rules democratically passed and applied). This kind of daily working acts as a guarantee of attention to the growing diversity of pupils. Starting from an ethnographic research in an array of schools in Spain original experiences on how to cope with challenging demands posed by knowledge society are scrutinized.
