Los discursos del encuentro y del desencuentro surgidos desde el primer contacto entre Europa y América

Abstract

Este trabajo tiene entre sus supuestos la relación que hubo —a partir del primer contacto de Europa con las Indias Occidentales— entre un doble tipo de prácticas, las de la España piadosa o las de la España impía, y dos tipos de discursos que hemos llamado del encuentro y del desencuentro. A partir de esta conjetura inicial, analizamos discursivamente textos o fragmentos de textos cuyas unidades léxicas, que han permanecido más o menos invariables a través del tiempo, se hacen cargo de uno de las dos polos de las categorías semánticas siguientes: piedad/impiedad, bondad/maldad, a fin de responder a un discurso o al otro. Nosotros tratamos de mostrar como se han ido entretejiendo ambos discursos a lo largo de la historia para poder discernir su vigencia actual.

This paper assumes that -since the first contact between Europe and the West Indies- there was a relation between two types of practices: those of the pious Spain and those of the impious one; and also between two types of discourse: a discourse about the agreement, and another one about the disagreement. In general, texts corresponding to the first type highlight the kindness of the lands discovered and their inhabitants, while those belonging to the second type show their degradation. From this first assumption, and from a discourse analisis perspective, we tackle texts or parts of texts in which lexical units that have remained invariable through time refer to one of the poles of the following semantic categories: piety / impiety, goodness / badness, correponding to one type of discourse or the other. In order to understand their present validity, this paper intends to show how both kinds of discourse have interwoven through history.
