The work of the Russian physiologist, Ivan P. Pavlov, is extensively known within the limits of psychology. Among all his contributions, those centered in the description and explanation of conditioned reflexes have deserved most of the psychologists’ attention. None the less, many other aspects in Pavlov’s work can be considered as relevant contributions for those days in psychology, psychiatry and physiology. One of the areas in Pavlov’s works that less attention have received refers to his experiments and theories about hypnosis. Although Pavlov first considered hypnosis as an inhibitory auto defense adaptive reflex, finally he reconsidered it as a particular kind of sleep restricted to certain cortical areas. In this work we review Pavlov’s studies on hypnosis, specially its theoretic implication as well as his attempts to generalize these results to human behavior.
