Nowadays, there exists a trend toward the increase of the electrical length of circuit interconnects due to the increase of the spectral content of the signals. This can have a significant effect on signal integrity for high-speed interconnects in digital circuits. The objective of this work is to study both through circuit simulation and experimentally two different printed circuit designs that have certain characteristics which help to illustrate the presence of undesirable effects on transmission lines at high frequencies. In particular, we illustrate the importance of the concept of characteristic impedance for electrically long lines. In this sense, we analyze the effect of the impedance mismatch caused by the geometry of the line or by the presence of stubs. Also we investigate the effect of discontinuities in the return plane of the circuit.
