The desperate cry of a filmmaker who has been arrested and forced to abandon his profession, This is NOT a film (Jafar Panahi, 2011) is a profound and serious reflection on two basic aspects of digital film theory. On the one hand, despite the penurious conditions marking the making of the film, Panahi managed to finish it illegally thanks to the digital equipment that he had at home. On the other, This is NOT a film necessarily takes the form of a personal diary. At several points during the film, the imprisoned director’s daily life and thoughts that he expresses aloud give way to a kind of “film-essay,” a series of intuitions about the poetics of digital films. From an extreme situation such as house arrest, Panahi advocates for ethical and responsible filmmaking as a form of resistance.
