Edmundo O’Gorman y Giambattista Vico
In his youth, O’Gorman was enthusiastic about historicism, but later we preferred not to be ascribed to any specific trend or school, but to a tradition. O’Gorman considers Vico as one of those historians who are not interested in history as something to be checked, but as something to be understood; not in the rigorous confirmation of facts, but in its articulation in the global dynamics of thought. Therefore, there are coincidences in their reflections on the nature of historical knowledge, the function of imagination, the methods to understand cultural diversity and, mainly, the problem of getting an ‘universal rationality’ which would not be limited to the technical or instrumental order.

This paper faces the Viquian problem of the body and its faculties, focusing on the concept of ‘undefined’, as well as on some varied conceptual and categorical binomials in Vico’s philosophy.

En línea con la historiografía protestante, Vico muestra que los egipcios habían desarrollado sólo un saber civil y que sus conocimientos filosóficos eran aquéllos aprendidos de los hebreos.; Vico’s attitude towards the ancient Egypt had its roots in the Seventeenth Century debate on the supremacy of Egyptian wisdom (and its invention of philosophy). In agreement with protestant historiography, Vico shows that Egyptians had only developed a kind of civil knowledge, whereas their philosophical knowledge had been received from Hebrews.

The aim of this paper is to show the necessity of a semantic approach to the concept of‘aspect’ in the Scienza nuova, as well as to defend a particular way of philosophical
comprehension. From a philosophical point of view, the dimension of aspectuality is in the origin of the correlation between imaginative perception on the one hand, and communication and expressive comprehension on the other (which is affectively marked, and multisensioral). Vico has shown in it, by the genetic and functional model of the three languages, the necessary condition to understand the development of specifically human language.
