Aquí se indaga en los orígenes del llamado «pro-blema eléctrico portugués», atendiendo a su dotación específica de re-cursos hidráulicos, la evolución de la regulación pública del sector y, por último, la estrategia de las dos empresas suministradoras en los dos distritos principales, ambas participantes en grupos-holding inter-nacionales. El artículo se ha beneficiado del acceso y consulta de fuen-tes empresariales y del Estado Novo portugués.In 1944, Portuguese electrification was characterized by two fea-tures: backwardness in relation to both Spain and Italy and polariza-tion around the districts of Porto and Lisbon. The article is devoted to analysing the origins of the so-called «Portuguese electrical prob-lem». First, it examines water resources. Second, it explores the evo-lution of the regulation of utility markets. Finally, it studies the cor-porate strategy of the two main companies of these two districts, both of which pertained international holding-groups.
