Incontri linguistici, 45, 33-47.1724-1669https://hdl.handle.net/11441/166885The verbs φορύνω and φορύσσω receive a range of different meanings in dictionaries, from ‘defile, spoil, stain’ to ‘mix, mix up’. In this paper, the meaning of these two verbs is established through a close inspection of the passages in which they are used. As will be demonstrated, they generally refer to the spreading of a non-solid substance onto a solid one. This is very similar to the definition of the verb φύρω as expressing ‘mix something dry with something wet, mostly with a sense of mixing so as to spoil or defile’ (LSJ s.v.). In fact, it can be argued that φορύνω and φορύσσω exhibit a certain semantic overlap with φύρω and its derivatives from their first testimonies.application/pdf21 p.engAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Homeric GreekHippocratesφορύνωφορύσσωφύρωOn the meaning of φορύνω and φορύσσω: the expression of soaking, smearing and spreading in Ancient Greekinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccesshttps://doi.org/10.19272/202200801002
