Por un lado, representan herramientas diag- nósticas prometedoras, que tienen el potencial de innovar las respuestas te- rapéuticas a patologías graves y difundidas tales como las enfermedades neu- rodegenerativas y cardiovasculares, y hasta el cáncer. Por otro lado, los relojes epigenéticos plantean cuestiones de gran relevancia para el jurista, inherentes a la protección de la dignidad humana, de la identidad y de la integridad a nivel genético, y susceptibles de afectar la esfera del derecho a la salud y del dere- cho a la ciencia. El presente estudio pretende analizar estas cuestiones desde el punto de vista de la bioética y de los derechos humanos, con el propósito de sugerir algunas respuestas a los desafíos que los relojes epigenéticos plantean, haciendo particular hincapié en el principio de la dignidad humana.Epigenetic clocks are molecular markers that predict, quite precisely, bio- logical age as wells as age-related diseases and mortality risk. On the one hand, they represent promising diagnostic tools, that have the potentiality to innovate our therapeutic responses to such serious and common condi- tions as neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer. On the other hand, epigenetic clocks raise important legal issues that relate to human dignity, genetic identity and integrity, the right to health and the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress.
