Durante las últimas décadas, varias disciplinas que investigan sobre las enfermedades cardiovasculares y los factores de riesgo cardiovascular -incluyendo la hipertensión arterial esencial (HTA)-, comenzaron a abordar estos problemas de salud desde una perspectiva de género, contraponiéndose a la postura androcéntrica, históricamente dominante. En este contexto, el presente trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar, de acuerdo al género, las estrategias de afrontamiento que utilizan los/as pacientes hipertensos/as esenciales frente al probable estrés que supone el diagnóstico de HTA. Se utilizó el diseño descriptivo-comparativo, de corte transversal. Participaron 200 pacientes hipertensos/as esenciales adultos/as, reclutados/as de distintos centros de salud situados en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Los instrumentos aplicados fueron Cuestionario sociodemográfico y clínico y Ways of Coping Questionnaire. Las estrategias de afrontamiento “Resolución planificada de problemas” y “Distancia” mostraron diferencias significativas según género, siendo ambas más utilizadas por los varones respecto a las mujeres. Orientados hacia el fortalecimiento de la calidad y equidad de género, se señala que la relevancia de este tipo de estudios radica en contribuir con elementos de juicio de interés que permitan planificar actuaciones preventivas y de intervención a partir de las necesidades y diferencias de mujeres y varones.
