La fuerza del destino: el cine de los hermanos Siodmak en Hollywood, 1941-1945

Abstract

A principios de los años cuarenta, la llegada masiva de emigrantes alemanes a los Estados Unidos transformó la industria de Hollywood. Entre las producciones de estos exiliados destacan las obras de Curt y Robert Siodmak que contribuyeron a crear nuevas narrativas dentro de la estructura del cine clásico. En particular, se pone de manifiesto cómo en muchas de sus obras aparece el tema del destino tratado de forma radicalmente diferente a la narrativa tradicional. Entre las películas en las que ellos participaron destacan El hombre lobo, Yo anduve con un zombi, El sospechoso y Pesadilla. En ellas se profundiza sobre el tema de la lucha que se establece entre el individuo y una serie de circunstancias que no acierta a controlar. Finalmente, se analiza hasta qué punto los hermanos Siodmak cuestionan muchos de los convencionalismos del American Dream y del pensamiento liberal.

The increasing arrival of German exiles in the United States played an important role in shaping Hollywood industry during the early forties. Among the exiles the works of Curt and Robert Siodmak stand out by creating a new cinematic narrative within the structure of Hollywood classic cinema. In particular, this essay analyses how the way they dealt with the relationship between individual and fate. In this regard, films such as The Wolf Man, I Walked with a Zombie, The Suspect and The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry are analyzed in terms of how individuals struggle against a series of circumstances escaping human control. Finally, this work explores how deeply their cinema challenged the American Dream by showing the limits of liberal ideology.
