El betilo estiliforme de Torreparedones

Abstract

El presente trabajo estudia el betilo (imagen divina de culto pétrea anicónica) de Torreparedones (Córdoba) a la luz de los nuevos datos aportados por la publicación en 1999 de la memoria de excavación de B. Cunliffe y M. C. Fernández Castro. Se analiza el santuario y el propio betilo, prestando especial atención a las implicaciones de la morfología betílica y al ritual, que incluyó probablemente funciones oraculares. La diosa del lugar, Dea Caelestis, heredera romana de la púnica Tanit, ejemplifica la importante influencia púnica.

This paper deals with the baetyl (i. e. aniconic stone cult image of a deity) of Torreparedones (Córdoba). Knowledge of this Andalusian site has been substantially improved by the publication of the dig report by B. Cunliffe and M. C. Fernández Castro in 1999. The sanctuary and the baetyl itself are analyzed; special attention is paid to baetylic morphology and its implications as well as to ritual, which probably included oracular activity. The important Punic influence is best exemplified by the goddess being Dea Caelestis, the Roman counterpart of Punic Tanit.
