El consumo de tabaco históricamente se configuró en España como un comportamiento ligado a la masculinidad tradicional, siendo una práctica mayoritariamente realizada por varones. Sin embargo, a partir de los años 60 y 70 –y, especialmente, con la democracia– las mujeres se incorporaron masivamente al consumo de tabaco, conformándose el cigarrillo en un símbolo de igualdad sexual y emancipación femenina. Actualmente, se observa en las generaciones jóvenes un acercamiento de las tasas de consumo de tabaco entre los sexos, llegando a ser superior en las mujeres entre la población adolescente. En esta comunicación, se examina cómo detrás de los indicadores de aparente convergencia o igualación entre los sexos se enmascaran procesos y nuevos resortes de desigualdad de género. Se ha empleado una estrategia de investigación cualitativa sustentada en entrevistas en profundidad y grupos de discusión a mujeres fumadoras y exfumadoras. Los resultados se organizan en tres planos en los que puede articularse el género cómo categoría analítica: a) plano estructural: organización social y división del trabajo, y acceso y control de los recursos; b) plano simbólico: modelos sociales de éxito, normatividad de género y estereotipos; y c) plano individual: identidades de género, expresión de los sentimientos y gestión del cuerpo. |
