Abstract | Desde que el hombre empezó a construir ha sido necesario el conocimiento del comportamiento de los materiales. El origen de la teoría matemática de la Elasticidad se puede situar a principios del siglo XIX principalmente con los trabajos de Cauchy quien introduce los conceptos de tensión y deformación, poco antes Fourier había publicado su trabajo sobre la propagación de calor. Durante el siglo XIX aparecen, entre otros, los trabajos de Poisson, Lamé, Green, Piola, Kirchhoff y Saint-Venant. A mediados del siglo XX el estudio de la Elasticidad cobra de nuevo impulso, posiblemente debido a las aplicaciones tecnológicas de los nuevos materiales que aparecen. Merece especial importancia el estudio de las láminas finas en aeronaútica, la propagación de vibraciones en los cuerpos para el diseño de maquinaria industrial, la propagación de ondas en materiales no homogéneos y anisótropos en geofísica, la transmisión de calor en astronaútica etc. Es también en este siglo cuando el análisis funcional moderno hace posible el estudio de la existencia, unicidad y comportamiento de las soluciones, permitiendo resolver problemas de estabilidad. Asimismo el desarrollo del análisis numérico proporciona una idea bastante aproximada del comportamiento real de los materiales, posibilitando un gran avance en el diseño de estructuras.En muchas situaciones de interés práctico, el estado de tensión-deformación de los sólidos está fuertemente influido por fenómenos térmicos, debido a la tendencia de los materiales a dilatarse al aumentar la temperatura.
