The attacks committed by the terrorist group ETA have conditioned the media agenda of Spanish journalism for more than 50 years. The information treatment has changed both in form and content throughout these decades, reaching a real freedom of speech since the Spanish Transition to democracy. However, the media was still driven by ideological and political interests during this stage and the truth about ETA’s attacks is unclear due to the different versions given by Spanish newspapers. Likewise, the use of compromising images of the attacks has evolved at the same time as the Spanish society did, moving from austere images to true representations of the horror lived. The object of this investigation is to clarify how ideological lines of the selected newspapers modified the reality of the attacks, both those committed by ETA and the 11-M attack, as well as to analyze the way in which the covers of El País, ABC and Egin disseminated different versions about the attacks. Likewise, a question related to the ethics of the journalistic profession arises: is it legitimate to publish everything? To answer this question, it has been done certain analysis about the images published on these covers, on the limits of representing victims of terrorism and victims of minors in the media. |
