The different views on the functioning of the natural world have puzzled philosophers since classical times. In this work, we analyze Émilie du Châtelet's view on the functioning of the universe, that is, what matter is, how movement appears and what knowledge principles we must use as explanatory tools of the world. In order to do so, the presentation here developed will focus on du Châtelet's thought in comparison with Descartes'. The latter was the interlocutor that she bore in mind when elaborating her work Institutions de Physique, which will be the basis for our essay. Thus, du Châtelet will take Leibniz and Newton for the construction of her metaphysics and her physics to converse with Descartes along her writing. |
