Seas and oceans cover approximately 70% of the earth's surface. Until not so long ago, we only focused our efforts on obtaining energy from the remaining 30%, from various sources, most of them quite aggressive with the planet. Since the end of the 18th century, humans have been curious about capturing energy from the oceans and seas, using waves as a source of energy. However, this proved to be extremely difficult, as it would require the development of a complex technology for that time. Currently, the production of energy from marine renewable sources is still quite low, although there are targets set to increase the installed power of wave energy for the coming decades. This work will focus on studying the influence that oscillating water column devices (OWC) can have on the evolution of the coastline, taking different scenarios, both for the maritime climate and for the placement of the devices with respect to the coastline. The site chosen for this study will be the Gulf of Cadiz, specifically, the coast near Cape Trafalgar (province of Cadiz). For this purpose, the maritime climate will be studied taking as a reference the data provided by Puertos del Estado, analyzing the data from a SIMAR point near the study area, using MATLAB software. This analysis will be used to characterize the mean and extreme regimes. With the maritime climate data, and making use of the Delft3D software, of the Delft University of Technology, the propagation of the waves from deep waters or undefined depths to the coast will be carried out, which will be done making use of the wave module (WAVE) provided by this program. This propagation will be done first without taking into account the existence of these devices, in order to see how the wave behaves in this area in unaltered conditions, and then modeling the devices in the software itself, placing them at different distances from the coast and seeing how they influence the wave and, therefore, on the energy that the wave is able to transmit once it crosses this obstacle. The aim of this work is to study these devices beyond their function of capturing renewable energy, also presenting their influence as fixed obstacles that can alter the natural sign of wave energy transport. The most relevant results suggest that the installation of oscillating water column devices slightly alters the coastal dynamics. This alteration is greater the higher the incident wave height. We will approach this analysis in the sense of longitudinal sediment transport, analyzing its variation in different situations, comparing it with the unaltered situation. |
